Wilhemenia David of Richmond died Nov. 9, 2010 at St. Frances Medical Center. Born in Marlboro County, S.C., she was the daughter of the late Willie Jacobs and Charlotte Jacobs and was married to the late James Russell David Sr.
Mrs. David is survived by three daughters, Lillie D. Cardenof Halifax, Bettye D. Morris of Virgilina and Barbara D. Jones of Rice, three sons, Robert Lee Green of Bennettsville, S.C., Alexander David and Russell David Jr. both Bronx, N.Y., a brother, James Willie Jacobs of Bennettsville, S.C. and a sister, Nancy Williams of Bronx, N.Y.
A funeral for Mrs. David will be conducted Saturday, Nov. 13, 2010 at 12:30 p.m. at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church with burial in Ideal Cemetery in South Carolina. .
Edith Pearson was the daughter of the late Sarah E. Ross Pearson and the late Willie Pearson. She was born April 13, 1931.
At an early age, she was baptized and joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church. She obtained her education from Marlboro Training School in Bennettsville, SC and higher education from New York.
Edith became a healthcare worker and a seamstress and was employed for many many years. She was a member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church Group, Church Sunday School, Church Trustee Board Member, and her church family.
Her life's motto entailed: strive, learn. Succeed, reach for high goals, entail Christianity, and follow guided directions well!
She was preceded in death by brothers and sisters.
Left to cherish her memory are a daughter Virginia Douglas (Eddie Douglas, Sr.) of Bennettsville, SC; a grandson, Eddie Douglas Jr. (Cortina Douglas) of Charlotte, NC; two sisters, Elizabeth Williams (Thomas Williams) of Charlotte, NC and Daisy Davis (Luther Davis) of Bennettsville, SC; one sister-in-law, Rethea Pearson of Darlington, SC; many nieces, many special nephews; many special friends; great special neighbors; wonderful grand nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives; great cousins and friends and a great church family.
Ellease McLeod was born December 9, 1913 in Bennettsville, SC. She departed this life in North West Hospital in Baltimore, MD on May 9, 2005. Ellease was the eldest daughter of the late John Robert McLeod and Rosa Kirk McLeod of Bennettsville, SC. She accepted Christ at an early age, was baptized and became a member of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Bennettsville, SC. Ellease was educated in the public schools of South Carolina prior to matriculating to Baltimore, Maryland in 1932. Shortly after her arrival in Baltimore, Ellease became a member of Union Temple Baptist Church. She was a faithful, willing and supportive member who attended regularly until her health began to fail. She worked with several organizations within the church including the adult ushering board and the kitchen committee. Ellease was a very warm and personable person who loved and enjoyed fellowship with her many relatives, church family, and friends. She also had a special bond with her nephew Leroy Lancaster. Leroy resided with her for many years and considered her to be his favorite Auntie. To cherish her memory are: two sisters, Willie Mae McElhaney of Baltimore, MD, Mary Lee Stubbs, of Bennettsville, SC; one brother, Eddie D. McLeod of Bennettsville, SC; a devoted nephew, Leroy Lancaster of Baltimore, MD; seven nieces, four other nephews, and a host of other relatives and friends.
HAMLET, N.C. — The Rev. John Lee Daniels was born Aug. 10, 1949 to Nathaniel and Lena Daniels in Franklinton, North Carolina. He transitioned from Earth to Heaven on Tuesday, Dec. 9, 2014 at the UNC Hospital in Chapel Hill.
The Rev. Daniels was baptized and joined the First Baptist Church, Franklinton at the age of 7. When he was 17, he was licensed as a minister of the gospel and subsequently ordained as a Baptist minister. He attended the local public schools and after graduating from BF Person Albion High School in 1967, matriculated at Shaw University in Raleigh, where he earned a bachelor's degree in religion and philosophy.
In 1973, John married the love of his life, Carrie Ward of Hamlet. Just days after their wedding, they embarked on a journey to St. Marc, Haiti where John served as superintendent of the Lott Cary Mission. When they returned to the United States, John served as the superintendent of the JJ Johnson Baptist Assembly in Laurel Hill. He had the privilege to serve as pastor to White Rock Missionary Baptist Church, St. Marc, Haiti; St. John Missionary Baptist Church, Aberdeen; Galilee Missionary Baptist Church, Taylortown; Mount Tabor Missionary Baptist Church, Rowland; Spring Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Wagram; Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, Bennettsville, South Carolina; Piney Grove Missionary Baptist Church, Evergreen, North Carolina, and was currently serving as pastor to the First Baptist Church, Hamlet.
Left to cherish his memories are his wife, Carrie Ward Daniels; his sister, Nathelia Juliet Brown; brother-in-law, Patrick Ward; sister-in-laws, Dr. Janice Moss (Charles), Betty Ward, Sharon Ward; niece, Kimberly Ward Davis; nephews, Melvyn Harris Brown III (Danielle), George Daniel Brown (Amanda); the church family at First Baptist Church, Hamlet; numerous cousins; devoted classmates from the BF Person Albion class of 1967; many friends; and the extended families and friends of the churches that he served throughout his tenure.
Mr. Eugene “Pete” Copeland, Jr, known to many as Chief or Pistol Pete. Mr. Copeland is recognized as being the first African-American Police Chief in the state of South Carolina. Mr. Eugene “Pete” Copeland, Jr., a native of Bennettsville, South Carolina, was the second born on January 29, 1928, to the late Eugene and Donella Copeland. His early education was earned at Marlboro County Training and High School in Bennettsville, South Carolina and he received his B.S. Degree in Business Administration from A&T State University, Greensboro, North Carolina. Mr. Copeland furthered his education at the South Carolina Criminal Justice Academy, Columbia, South Carolina.
Mr. Copeland joined the Bennettsville Police Department July 4, 1953, breaking the color barrier in Marlboro County. His promotions included the rank of Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain. He was appointed to the position as Chief of Police in 1973, and at that time was cited by the South Carolina House of Representatives by a Concurrent Resolution as being the FIRST BLACK CHIEF OF POLICE IN THE STATE. Mr. Copeland retired from the Bennettsville Police Department after 37 years of service with 17 years as Chief of Police.
Eugene was a member of numerous civil and social organizations. To name a few, he served as a Trustee and choir member at Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, a 32degree mason, Worthy Patron of Queen of Sheba #5 Order of Eastern Star; Member of American Legion Post; eight year board member of Marlboro County Board of Education; Board Member of United Fund; Mental Health Association and the American Red Cross; the first black to become affiliated with Kiwanis Club of Bennettsville, SC in 1977; member of Cheraw Alumni Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity; President of Council on Aging; mentor for Boys to Men; a committee member of the Old Marlboro County Training High School, Bennettsville, SC and a founder of Palmetto State Law Enforcement Association (PSLEOA).
He was the recipient of numerous awards from various professional and community organizations. He has been cited twice as “Lawman of the Year” by WBSC Radio Station, and has received other outstanding citizenship awards and service to the City of Bennettsville and the State of South Carolina. He was listed in the 1975 edition of Outstanding Americans in the South and appointed to the Governor’s Committee on Criminal Justice, Crime and Delinquency. In 2003, he was named Kappa Man of the Year. Mr. Copeland ran an unsuccessful race for Mayor of Bennettsville in 1990. For all his dedicated commitments to Bennettsville, they renamed his street from Bostic St. to Eugene Copeland St.
On June 27, 2008, Chief peacefully departed his physical life and left his fellow citizens, friends, and loved ones to cherish his memories. We salute our very own Black History!
John Troy McQueen was born in Bennettsville, South Carolina . He grew up on a farm. He was the ninth of ten children born to Kinney and Estelle Oliver McQueen. Through determination and faith was how he worked his way through college. A Bachelor of Science degree in Biology was received from Johnson C. Smith University in Charlotte, North Carolina. He holds a Master's Degree in education with a certification in Elementary School Administration from the University of South Carolina. He taught fifth and sixth grades before becoming an Elementary School Principal. He has worked at the School District Office level and as an Attendance Supervisor and an Adult Education Director. He retired in 2002 following a career of thirty- five years in education ,all in South Carolina schools. Mr. McQueen is the author of the following books: A World Full of Monsters, A Biography of Edward James Sawyer, Marlboro County's Black Heritage , Marlboro County's African American Heritage , and Famous First Facts ( about African American heritage in Marlboro County). His marriage to the former Dorothy Jackson of Chester , South Carolina produced four adult sons : John Troy, Jr., Gregory Lamont , Garrick Desmond, and Jackson Kinte. He and his wife are also the Guardian of a daughter, Felicia Rogers. He is a member of of Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church, where he is a Deacon and sings in the choir. He is a Mason and holds membership in several civic organizations. He enjoys reading , gardening , and traveling.

James Franklin Napoleon eldest Progeny of the late Melton and Pearl Williams Napoleon Ross came forth into this world on November 6, 1919. “Doc” as he was affectionately called attended and graduated from the Marlboro County Public Schools. Upon graduating from high school he enlisted in the United States Navy in 1944 and served his country for four years and received an honorable discharge on March 12, 1948. Mr. Napoleon returned to Bennettsville and began working for former Mayor for the city of Bennettsville, The Honorable Troop Crosland. While continuing to work for the Crosland’s he became an employee of Marlboro Wholesale Grocery as a truck driver. He was a dedicated and loyal employee of the business for the duration of his employment and retired in 1984. Mr. Napoleon knew the importance of salvation and at a young age he decided to make Jesus his choice. He was a lifelong member of the Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church located in Bennettsville, South Carolina. He served the church in numerous capacities, namely the trustee ministry, senior choir, male chorus, assistant church clerk and the men Sunday school class. He loved his church and gave from his heart to ensure that the church would meet its goals and objectives as they grew the kingdom of God.
In 1970 Mr. Napoleon became a member of Landmark Masonic Lodge # 16 of free accepted mason under the Jurisdiction of the Most Worshipful Prince Hall Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of South Carolina. His achievements in Landmark Lodge include Most Worshipful Master, Which is the highest ranking officer in the blue lodge. Mr. Napoleon had a heart of Gold and a personality that was impeccable. He enjoyed reading, and the Bible was his favorite book. In 1988 he left Bennettsville for Chicago, Illinois where he was united in Holy matrimony to Mrs.Doretha Robinson Chapman. The lovely couple returned to Bennettsville South Carolina after their union to reside at 305 King Street. After his health began to decline in 2011, and he could no longer maintain a normal quality of life he became a patient of Agape Hospice. For over four years he received the best professional and courteous health care service from the many, certified nurses, nurses assistant. Social workers and the entire staff. Demetrius McBride Ford was his God sent angel and did an outstanding job rendering care to him. She along with Ethel McArthur or now extended family members, and we will never forget them.
Mr. Napoleon is survived by his devoted wife of the home Two sisters, Christine Napoleon of Brooklyn NY, and Ophelia Williams of Bennettsville. His children Lillie Mae David, Edward C. (Carlena) Smith, Reverend James E. (Tawanka M.)Smith Grand Children Croshanda S. (Ronteria) Covington, Kendrick Smith, Charles, N. (Sharon) Smith Vermesha Smith, Lamont Curtis and a very special grandson Marlon D. Smith Sr. (Sche’vaun) who rendered untiring care and was a gracious and loving caretaker for many years. Also left to cherish his memory are four loving and caring nieces Christine, Pearl, Joyce and Doris Napoleon of Brooklyn, NY. Mr. Napoleon also had three awesome cousins who ensured that all of his needs were met and loved him dearly Bessie M. Simmons, Carolyn Gregg and Morris Brown and a host of other nieces, nephews, relatives and friends.

Robert accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age and joined Macedonia Missionary Baptist Church in Bennettsville, S.C, where he served faithfully on the Trustee and Usher Board. He received his education from the Marlboro County Public School District; graduating in the Blenheim High School Class of 1970.
Robert was united in holy matrimony to the love of his life, Elois McLaughlin on July 31, 1971. To this union five children were born.
Robert was employed at Mohawk Industry (Oak River) from 1967 until 1987. He was the owner and operator of “Cain’s Backhoe Service” from 1987 until his retirement in 2008. After retirement, he enjoyed supervising his son while he managed the family business, enjoyed riding on his tractors/backhoes, fishing, watching westerns and NBA basketball with his sweetheart. Every year, he looked forward to taking a cruise his family. He also loved being outside with his grandchildren and talking with his friends.

Elois was employed as a machine operator at the United Technology Plant (Essex) in Bennettsville, South Carolina for 26 years. She was later employed at Perdue Farms in Dillon, South Carolina for 14 years. After her retirement, she loved babysitting her grandchildren.
She loved watching NBA basketball games with her husband. Her all-time favorite player was LeBron James. She also loved dancing and listening to gospel music. She devoted her life to cooking and taking care of her family. Her family was the most important thing to her and she went above and beyond to take care of them.

He was converted at an early age and joined Macedonia Baptist Church. During his early years he sing on the children's choir.
He attended Wright High School in Blenheim, SC and Graduated in 1969. After graduating he

During his visits he said he would never live in New York. He changed his mind; he went to New York to live in the 70's. Over the years he was employed with several Companies.
He relocated back to Blenheim, SC in 1994 to marry the love of his life, Carrie McCollough. He reinstated his membership with Macedonia Baptist where he sincerely loved the Pastor and Church family and was a member of the Pastor's Aide. He was a member of Mystic Union Lodge No. 31. He worked for several different Companies. He retired from Mountaire Farms of North Carolina.
Tyson was a loving friendly person, who was a confidant and anchor for many of his family and friends. His greatest job was his family, friends, Church and watching the New York Yankees.
He departed life on earth Thursday, March 11, 2021 at Chapel Hill UNC Hospital, Chapel Hill, NC.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife: Carrie Moses; seven children: Lisa McCullough, Jacqueline Bethea, Mark McCollough (Wendy), Regina Sigler (Tony), Lucille McCall (Derrick), Justin Sullivan, Derrick Edwards; four sisters: Lucille Allen (Alexander), Mary Barnes (Willie), Creola McIntyre, and Carolyn Bradford; Aunt: Mary Elizabeth Walker. Seventeen Grandchildren; twenty great grands; sisters-in-law: Virginia Hawley, Dollie Warney, Diane Bethea, Diane Bradford and Lula McKiver; brothers-in-law Charles McCollough, David McCollough, and James McCollough; special nephew: Darrin Bethea; close friends: Hezekiah Ward, Ronald Henegan, Robert Fore, Alexander Townsend, Hinson Covington, Cassandra Owens and Eskamada Smith. A host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends.

Mrs Burnell McCrae Jackson, 97, passed away on February 18, 2021 at Faith Health Care in Florence, S.C. She was the daughter of the late Deacon Fred and Polly Pouncy McCrae.
Deacon Cozell McQueen Sr. heard the last sounds of the Tap on January 11, 2022 after an extended illness at his residence. He was born on January 18,
1937, in Marlboro County to the Late Kinney Sr. and Estelle Oliver McQueen.
Deacon McQueen Sr. received his formal education in the public schools of
Marlboro County. He grew up in a loving and caring home. During his
youth, he confessed Christ as his Savior and joined Macedonia Missionary
Baptist Church.
He joined the military at a young age. He was a member of the 82nd Airborne,
Fort Bragg, NC where he retired after 22 years. He then went to work at
Galey and Lord in Society Hill, SC where he was the head electrician for 20 years.
Deacon McQueen Sr. was a loyal and faithful member of Macedonia
Missionary Baptist Church as one of the Senior Deacons. He was a Sunday School teacher where he taught the teens. He was a member of the Male Chorus, Senior Choir, and Voices of Praise. He also drove the church bus and van.
One of his favorite sayings was “OLD SOLDIERS NEVER DIE, THEY
JUST FADE AWAY.”
His wife Betty F. McQueen; four sisters, Ethel Lee Madison, Mary McQueen Leake, Annie Gladys McQueen, and Doreen McQueen Davis; two brothers,
Kinney McQueen Jr., and John Troy McQueen Sr. predeceased him.
Left to cherish his fond memories are two daughters, Betty H. McQueen of the home and Beverly Muse (Jeffrey) of Delaware, four sons, Cozell McQueen Jr. (Rev. MisChella) of Cary, NC, Vincent McQueen of Washington, DC, Desi

brothers-in-law, Freddie Purvis, Henry L. Purvis, Woody Purvis (Claudie Mae), Larry Purvis (Mamie), James Paul Purvis (Martha), Ronnie Purvis (Elaine) and Gordon Purvis all of Bennettsville, SC; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
